Is the Digital Card Game Medium Over?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 11:03 AM PDT

There was a big update to the Magic the Gathering vision today. Supposedly, because of Covid (what a dumb excuse), Wizards has realized that In-person play is a unique strength for their game.

They are keeping digital play (duh!), and are looking into starting more local events. The number of big online events is winding down until the next Arena world championship event.

There are a whole lot of MTG Twitter people saying how things could have been better and what should have been done. Come on though, it's Magic the Gathering, isn't that a big enough thing that we can start to say it's not about the excuses? These are the same excuses that happen all of the time. If only they did this. They could of done that. This is Magic we are talking about. MAGIC... They should have been able to make it work!

And I bring this news here because TESL early development under Direwolf and continuation via Sparkypants was tremendously influenced by, for lack of a better term, Magic the Gathering insiders. And what did they bring us? It wasn't too long ago that the same MTG pros who worked on TESL told us how much Magic has changed and lamented the obscene draw power there is now. Well, when you got a chance to design an online game, what did you make and what playstyles did you encourage?

The developers aren't stupid. When of their own free will and judgment in a game that they have their lives invested in and don't want to see ruined, they come to similar conclusions about what not so great game design looks like.

So what is the problem? All I can point to is nebulous. Maybe it's capitalisms fault that digital card games are trash? Corrupting strategy to have a more accessible game sounds like something that people trying to make money would do. Maybe this is due to current moral values. If someone can't say no to a bad idea because there is "no wrong way to live" or enjoy something, then of course it's not long before development can become deranged. Some of you may see these ideas as silly and they are a little bit, but there has to be something besides the same old excuses.

And whatever that reason is, it means that the concept of digital card gaming belongs on top of the dung heap of history. Maybe someone can figure it out, but clearly the current hype into bust strategy isn't viable for a long term and sustainable online game.

What's a card that always seems to find it's way into your deck?

    Posted: 12 May 2021 01:56 PM PDT

It doesn't have to be because it's good, you may just like it. Maybe you feel like this card comes in clutch all the time. Maybe you really like the art.

For Me Barded Guar is always in my deck. I like Guars in general and I think it's effect is always nice.

I also usually put in Jiub knowing 1 I'll probably not going to be in a situation where I can turn him into St. 2 St Jiubs ability is worthlessly situational

but man I like the art and I like Jiub.

Anyone else think javelin is op as an insta kill prophecy? I think either make it 5 damage or lose prophecy. (I know neither of those things will happen)
