FAQ about Ranked, Elo and Matchmaking

Many people ask about this because the game doesn't explain this much.

    1. Matchmaking uses Elo - not Rank. Rank is what the game's interface shows you. Elo is the internal matchmaking rating (hidden in American version, but TESL Asia shows it)
    2. If you win, you gain Elo. If you lose, you lose Elo. The extent of how much you gain/lose is determined by the Elo of your opponent. Since a matchmaker usually won't be able to find two players with the exact same Elo, it compensates for this. The lower Elo player will gain more for winning and lose less for losing.
    3. Each month, Rank hard-resets but Elo is not hard-reset. The reset is a way to get players to play more matches instead of reaching their peak rank and then play less often.
    4. Someone being in Legend doesn't mean that they are higher elo than someone in the number ranks. A Rank 3 player could have a higher Elo than a Rank 1. A Rank 2 could be the 9th highest Elo player. A Rank 3 could have a higher Elo than a Legend.
    5. The number ranks (12-1) are inflationary. Since you promote on wins but don't demote on losses, as a result, it's possible to climb to Legends even with a negative winrate.
    6. Losses can't demote your (12-1) number constellation rank, but still affect your Elo, which can cause people to place at a lower # when they get to Legend.

And in the Legend rank, a common question is "What affects how many places I go up and down"? Why is it inconsistent. Why do I move by 10-15 sometimes and very little to none at other times?

Because numerical rank is relative. In the top 100, it's ordinal. There are 100 people in 100 slots. But Elo isn't distributed uniformly like that.

I'll give this population graph (of millionaires in each country) as an example.

If Italy gains 100000, it surpasses 3 countries and goes up 3 places.

If Canada gained 100000, it would still stay in the same place.

Challenge: make a deck that beats the opponent with sweet rolls

    Posted: 06 May 2020 12:48 PM PDT

Literally. Win condition is bashing face with sweet rolls. (Does not need to be competitive in the ranking.)

Somewhat in the spirit: decks using sweet rolls as substantial part of their combatants, or using them to enable other cards.
