Building on the Invade Mechanic - An Oblivion Portal Rework

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 08:33 AM PDT

As a concept, the idea of building up huge Oblivion Portals and overwhelming your opponent with Daedra is awesome and a great theme to build an expansion around. However, for me (and I think some of you) something feels off with their current implementation. The random keyword generation feels like a very lackluster reward for building a deck around, and can cause frustrating scenarios for you and your opponent depending on the abilities rolled. Here, I've reworked the Portal mechanic in an attempt to make them feel more interesting and rewarding to play with and against.

    Oblivion Portal
    Permanently Shackled; Immune to Silence

    Level 1: 0/2 / Friendly Daedra have +0/+1.
    Level 2: 0/4 / Friendly Daedra have +1/+1.
    Level 3: 0/6 / Friendly Daedra have +1/+1 and cost 1 less.
Level 4: 0/8 / Friendly Daedra have +1/+1 and cost 1 less. At the end of your turn, add a 1/1 Scamp to your hand.
Level 5: 0/10 / Friendly Daedra have +1/+1 and cost 1 less. At the end of your turn, add a 1/1 Scamp to your hand and draw a card.

Activating Invade will level up the highest level Gate on your board. If all friendly gates are level 5, a new gate will spawn instead.

    • Lower levels remain the same and reward faster, swarming decks that Invade very quickly.
    • Higher levels changed to reward slower decks that protect the gates through resource generation.
    • Health reduced at each level, but maximum level easier to achieve to allow for dynamic board states and reduced 'run-away' games where only a giant single portal is needed to overwhelm the opponent.
    • Additionally, +x/+x being an aura rather than a direct buff allows for more counter play in breaking apart Daedra boards by targeting portals.
    • No random keywords to limit 'Feel Bad' scenarios.
    • Multiple gates allows Invade to recover quicker rather than a single removal card resetting Invade decks to Level 1.
    • Additionally, multiple portals allows for multiple buffs to stack, mimicking the role of the current random keywords.
    • Level 4/5 gates allow for more flexibility in deckbuilding, as there is less pressure to just stack your deck with as many Daedras as possible to reap the benefits.
    • Additionally, Level 4/5 helps alleviate some of the card draw issues Invade decks have with requiring such a large core package.
    • Being able to spawn multiple portals and for those portals to spawn creatures feels more thematically appropriate.

As with all concepts like this, this is just for a bit of fun. This is my take on the Invade mechanic and how I would like to see it function, but of course there's no way for me to test whether its balanced or not. Some cards would probably have to get changed to accommodate something like this. I don't know. I threw this together in an hour. I just felt like posting this, maybe they'll be some interesting discussion out of it.

Sparky: I would LOVE an expansion that...

    Posted: 11 Oct 2019 08:24 PM PDT

...adds no new mechanics but simply bolsters older mechanics to viability.

It can be fun to introduce new mechanics with each expansion and focus it around those. Invade is fun to play and so are the new handbuff options. However, when was the last time you saw a deck that used Veterans? Rally-centric decks (aside from occasional use to supplement handbuff)? Shouts and similar mechanics where each cast of a spell empowers future spells? There's a long list of past mechanics that simply don't see play anymore and are essentially "dead" cards.

For example, imagine, given the introduction of handbuff as a real archetype, a new card was introduced around Rally as follows:

    Targeted Recruitment

    Willpower, 3 mana, Support

When you Rally, you may choose the target creature.

    Or how about this:

    Special Forces

    Strength, 4 mana, Nord

    3 / 3

Veteran: When you have 3 Veterans in play, give all Veterans +2 / +2

    Or this:

    Stoke the Flames

    Endurance, 9 mana, Action

The target creature deals damage equal to its power to all creatures in its lane when it attacks.

Plot: The damage is dealt to both lanes.

Now the balance on those sample cards may be way off but that's not the point. The point is that introducing stuff like that would further diversify the meta.

    Your Gauntlet experience.

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 11:35 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

Just like the title said how was your gauntlet experience?

    Mine was bad: 1/3 1/3 and 2/3.

First 2 where prophecie battlemage but you can say battlemage without the prohecies cuz they where not coming. And my starting hand was also not that great losing me tempo.

Second was invasion mage which went slightly better but not by much since if they invade earlier than you plus they got the ring, you're screwed.

I encountered a lot of crusader/aggro battlemage and invasion mage in this place and once your behind tempo you just know you will lose.

It was such a slugfast which who can put more pressure on the board in the first 4 turns and you know who will win which i didn't like.

Upside though was i got 2 legendaries and 2 premium so it was not all that bad. But next time no more of this please Sparkypants.

    Thoughts on Jaws of Oblivion

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 01:57 AM PDT

I've been playing the game since beta and always couldn't wait to try out new expansions but this time, I didn't even log into the game on the release day (saw the spoiler the night before the release). Alliance War was my least favorite expansion but I did spare at least a few hours to test some of the new cards....

There are several things that disappointed me but what I didn't like the most is the Invade/Daedric mechanic that took up the majority of the set's space. I mean, I somewhat value uniqueness and individuality in the game, so I had nearly zero interest in building an Invade/Daedra-themed deck that they encourage us to build.

The problem is that basically, these cards are solely for a particular thematic deck and not something we can throw into our existing decks unlike the other more generic cards from the past sets. It's probably very exciting for Daedra fans but it could be the worst set for people with little interest in it like me. I've got to say it's a heavily polarized set that only particular people would enjoy. I believe most players are not expecting any more new mechanics for the time being.

I hope they'll revisit the long-awaited past mechanics in the next expansion.

    Aggro Dwemer with Marauder Chieftan

    Posted: 12 Oct 2019 10:57 AM PDT

I encourage you all to play around with Marauder Chieftan. It is a very strong card IMO. Comes down, potentially allows you to trick a trade while buffing itself by +1/+0 concurrently, and very consistently grows anywhere between 5-9 power. My personal favorite card of the new set.

As far as win rate, I'm currently 8-0. The neutral package is strong enough to carry itself, and many times you never even see chieftan and are at full health as your opponent loses their last rune. Fast deck, allows you to get ahead quickly with creature buffs and combat tricks.

With Halls of the Dwemer, chieftan grows by +3/+0 each time you play a dwemer. Please, try this card out. It belongs in more than just orc tribal (which it is incredibly strong in as well). Try it in tokens with fifth legion and fervor. You're free to make your own choices as far as inclusions, which is why I didnt include the list. However, staple cards in this list would be chieftan, the dwemer package, Dagons Flayer, orc clan captain, etc.

Edit!!!!: totally forgot to mention, this is in warrior. Things like sower, bleakcoast, and mammoth are auto includes

Sparkypants I think its high time to update this card

Since you've added so many new Atronach cards to the game I think its only fair to High Rock Summoner to be updated already on some new Atronach Summon spells haha. Just had to put that little pun in there. No but seriously, it really should be updated already. It will make the card more interesting.
